There are many attractive financial reasons to go green in today's business world, including a growing number of environmentally and energy-friendly tax incentives that are available at both the state and federal levels. The most popular method of providing tax breaks to businesses for energy-saving activities is through the use of corporate income tax credits. Such credits are a direct reduction of a company's tax liability. Other common means of providing incentives to businesses are through sales tax reductions or exemptions and property tax abatements. Some states also are offering nontax incentives such as grants for energy-saving endeavors. (E. Bowman, 18 Journal of Multistate Taxation and Incentives, No. 8, 16 (November/December 2008).)
